Also slightly off-topic, thinking of going on hols to Croatia - have been told the weather is lovely in summer there - is Dubrovnik worth a visit?

Absolutely. The islands are even better: Korcula (my favourite), Hvar, Susak, Lastovo. All regularly served by cheap comfortable ferries. You'll find them all on the web. The weather is similar to Corfu. Plenty hot.

Dubrovnik is a beautiful mediaeval walled city, nowhere else like it in Europe. However in 4 hours you've seen it all.

Then head for the port and hit the islands via the Jadrolinija ferries. You'll not regret it.

It's probably under commercialised, particularly on the islands. Beaches are generally small pebbles, however I know where the sandy beaches are, check out the village of Lumbarda on www.korcula.net.

Melbourne

I went to Melbourne for a year but ended up coming back when the tenants moved out... also for the richer culture of having Europe at your doorstep. Australia is great but a tad isolated.

Now though with Blair & Gordo ... they have shafted the country proper.

But something springs to mind that Tony Benn once said " The banks will and can hold the country to ransom". Looks like they held the whole globe to ransom.

Also lived in Switzerland last year .. great being in the centre of Europe even though the Swiss are bit weird.

I guess Australia is still the best at the moment but it is getting just as expensive as here.

TV is easy. We watch hardly any Aussie TV, UK TV is still much better and you can get *everything* you want (including BBC radio) from the net, from uknova for example. Everything else decent is from the US and equally downloadable.

People always bring up the culture thing about Aus but in Melbourne for example there is a year long stream of festivals. Currently it is comedy then Jazz, theatre etc. They do have theatres, museums and galleries here!

On the point about isolation, having lived in the US I felt far more isolated there. The news and media rarely mentioned anything outside US shores. Here the papers have lots of UK and World news stories and they even report all the football news and results.

I might miss some TV: University Challenge, Mastermind, QI. I might frig a way of watching them online. But part of it is the pride in knowing that no other country would do them.

There's nothing illegal about Usenet downloads and Uknova only post material that is not available to buy (yet). Not sure of the strict legality there.
