BMI is no use for individuals. It was always, and is intended for statistical use in measuring whole populations. The fact that insurers use it in calculating premiums is more evidence that the financial industry is seriously confused about the nature of risk and probability, which are two very different things.

By the way, my BMI's 31.
I suspect it's just a conveniently sloppy way of measuring body fat, or density. This would be mass/volume, but weight and height are easier to measure than volume, so those are plugged in instead of volume.

Looking at that picture, I suspect she would always have huge hips, even if she lost weight.

It’s so sloppy that it’s useless. In fact it’s worse than useless; it can actually be damaging when used for anything other than trend analysis over a very large group of people. If a bricklayer has a bmi of over 25, is he fat or muscular? If an office worker has a bmi of over 30, is he fat or does he do a lot of training? If a heroin addict has a BMI of 22, is he healthy or on the edge of death?

Honestly, BMI really gets my goat; it gives people unrealistic goals, completely buggers up calculations of risk and is used to scare people into buying snake oil.

Yeah, using volume instead of height would be better. But being too muscular could be bad too. Average is probably best.
