Yeah, using volume instead of height would be better. But being too muscular could be bad too. Average is probably best.

Using %tg body fat would be better stil,l but that requires proper measurement rather than a back of a fag packet calculation.

It’s so sloppy that it’s useless. In fact it’s worse than useless; it can actually be damaging when used for anything other than trend analysis over a very large group of people. If a bricklayer has a bmi of over 25, is he fat or muscular? If an office worker has a bmi of over 30, is he fat or does he do a lot of training? If a heroin addict has a BMI of 22, is he healthy or on the edge of death?

Honestly, BMI really gets my goat; it gives people unrealistic goals, completely buggers up calculations of risk and is used to scare people into buying snake oil.

Granted, but the posts I was responding to either quoted a healthy weight or BMI itself.

From the picture I can pretty much guarantee you that the lady in question is not high in the BMI charts as a result of serious exercise/muscular physique, but rather as a result of spending too much time with Ben and Jerry.

As an aside, generally those who exercise regularly (let alone those who have a career in sports) are usually familiar with the flaws in the BMI calculations, but as an indicator for the average joe it does give a reasonable guideline. On the whole, if you're a similar shape to wizbit you should really get to the gym more often.
