£400 p/d? If you are not happy with that rate, quit the role and let someone else have £400 p/d. I would love to have that type of rate.

The agency is not asking for £400 p/d + 40%, they are asking for £550 p/d of which 27% is their income for finding you the role. Be grateful for being work, some of us would love to be in some form of work right now.

It is a fact that agencies feel free to exploit nooby contractors, and it makes me really angry. In my first contract I was ripped off by 43.3 (recurring) percent.
When I found out I rang the agency demanding a renegotiation of the terms and when they refused I went direct to the client and asked that they place me through another agency. When they told me that they only dealt with one agency, I held firm. The whole HR department spent the day jumping through hoops but I eventually got what I wanted.

I worked alongside this poor chap, who only found out what his agent made just before his contract ended. The client had tried to get the recruiter to lower their charge but they wouldn't. So they didn't renew and the bloke lost out. Luckily I had a good agent.

Take your £400 and be grateful, especially in the current economic climate.

Remember you're a contractor now, not a whingeing permie any more.

If you're that unhappy negotiate yourself another contract elsewhere.

If you don't feel you're up to doing that consider going back permie.

Otherwise keep applying the lube for the next 6 months and chalk it up to experience.
