Wetherspoons and Lloyds no1 bars

I want to sing their praises. Their prices are incredibly cheap, and the beers are great. As a member of CAMRA I get 50p discount vouchers and was in the west country camping last week. In Tiverton I managed to get a pint of Ruddles Best, one of my favourite beers, for 49p. In Taunton, Exeter, and Yeovil I paid 79p. Keep it up, Wetherspoons !!!

Major drawback with Wetherspoons I find is how long it can take to get served. Beats me how they make money, never mind find the dosh to keep investing in new outlets. But yes, their prices are very good. The closest one to me is a bit boring tbh, but there are one or two about with a beer garden in London.

I actually quite like Wetherspoons too, apart from the fact cheap drinks attract certain types at the weekend. I don't like Lloyds though, I really appreciate that Wetherspoons don't play music.

Though chain pubs can be nasty, they seem to do well at choosing nice buildings and not covering them with garishly over-branded rubbish.

By the way, have you been to their curry evenings? Mango chutney at 'spoons... but you get an individual portion so it's safe.

Another plus point is they have decent toilets. So many "traditional" pubs lose their appeal when you have to stand in a p*sspool and aim into a leaking urinal. Not pleasant.

I'm not a big fan of Wetherspoons pubs. However, I must say that they have improved a hell of a lot in recent years. Previously, the staff training was terrible, but now that problem has been addressed.

The only one I regularly use is the Crosse Keys in the City. I went past the Hamilton Hall the other day and had a quick look inside: I still hate the place.

I did not have any problems there. Then again, I was mainly a daytime visitor. I also appreciate the free provision of newspapers, although they are obviously not upmarket enough to offer The Mail. ;0)

They seem to do a good business with food though, so this probably compensates a bit for the cheap booze. The Imperial, which is a massive converted hotel in Exeter was absolutely chocca last Saturday, helped by the fact that it is so close to the university. At least JD Wetherspoons appear to be creating some nice pubs against the trend while many others are closing.

I totally agree with you there. There's nothing worse than loud music disrupting good conversation. I would like to see them offer live football though, as the combination of that and cheap booze would be irresistible to me.
