The point is, if most people don't wash their hands, you might as well not bother. You'll end up dirtier from the door than before you washed.

Indeed - I always make sure there's a good wad of paper towel between my mitt and the door handle. I never used to be this neurotic but I really don't want to get that norovirus. Ever.

I am using the elbows for that purpose. Old style taps are tricky though ..

When I was growing up in india my mother used to make all us boys stand in a line and hold out our hands for inspection before we went into the pantry to dine.

So what's the problem?

The problem is that some muslims are thus refusing to abide by hygiene regulations, which will have knock-on effects for us all. Not all hospitals will have non-alcohol based hand lotions and I would not expect them to, so if they refuse to use the lotions it will help to propagate MRSA germs etc.

It's just the thin end of an unhygienic wedge.
