Because insurance companies don't check in that much detail. All they care about is previous claims. They will happily take your money and then tell you

"Oh, sorry, looks like your policy is invalid as you didnt tell us you had no licence / had previous claims or convictions you didnt tell us about / were'nt entirely honest in your application."

then keep the cash and refuse to pay any claims.

10 years ago, 1999 - (18 years old). order of events:

1. Got license, passed first time (Schumacher!!)
2. Finished Degree
3. First job, London -
4. drove back home on the Millennium new years eve. Was working long hard hours to build software for the year 2000 bug
5. had BIG accident, car had to be cut open, expecting not a moving person
6. police prosecute me, dangerous driving and due car - get 6 points in court.
7. failed to send license back, due to asking for changes to photo card license - so they revoke it....

This has been the case since 1 June 1997. It's got nothing to do with whether or not you sent it back to them.

Your driving instructor should have told you that. Mine certainly did when I finally got around to taking up driving in 2001.

Yup - he'll have to get a provisional licence and take both the theory and practical tests; six points within two years is the same as if you'd never passed at all

Bit of a bummer to say the least, but it's probably better off finding out about it this way than as a result of an accident

I'm pretty sure if I was driving from Bradford to Birmingham I'd take the M1.

I might take the M6 if I wanted to miss a meeting.

There again I don't live in the UK and they might have moved these roads about a little, like they did in Cambridge.

It never has, the nearest it gets to Birmingham is Nottingham northish route (M42 & A42) and Leicester southish route(M6 & M69).

I'd go M6 & M62 (or some variation round Manchester) onto the M62 unless I started very much East Brum.

No real sympathy I'm afraid, while I'm guilty of speeding from time to time I'm certain that my licence and my other docs are in order as it would be an invitation for them to chuck the book at me if they weren't.
Daveb summed it up well, significant points with a ban and a large fine are to be expected and time in one of Her Majesties Houses for Naughty People could be on the cards too.
