The whole of this argument is irrelevant because BT, M&S, Tesco et al are using a loophole to bring in cheap labour from outside of the UK. If this loophole were closed then as you correctly say expat, the market rate would not be benchmarked against Indian labour.
Let us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyone

What is the day rate for Indian IT staff? Someone is likely making a killing there.

They get charged out to the companies they work for much more than that though (and what they could manage on in a third world country) , no?

Yes, and seeing as those companies have sacked all the people who knew anything about technology they can bill 200 hours for 2 hour jobs and no-one bats an eyelid (except Mich the Tester, but nobody listens to him anyway). Indian programmer returns to slum with second hand colour TV to watch cricket in his 2 hours of spare time per week, Indian boss man buys another yacht. European manager collects plenty bonus for making plenty 'efficiency savings' and buys new BMW.

All paid for by, you've guessed it, taxpayers.

              Good, now you're learning.
So the solution is to be one of the boss-men.
              T'was ever thus.
              Hard Brexit now!

Aha, I have a cunning plan. Along with a fellow freelancer I'm doing just that now.

Well the multinational plan is to buy a good at third world prices and sell it to first world prices. Talking about strategy and value creation. Not even sasguru could come up with a better plan.

                  * To be fair that is what happened a long time ago in the textile sector. They buy rubbish made in china at chinese prices but they try to sell it to you at europe prices. That is until I realised that it's all the same rubbish and then I just bought directly that non-branded chinese clothing at chinese prices. Now european/american clothing manufacturers are complaining about unfair competition

I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.
