I practised a lot after studying as I knew it would give me an advantage in finding jobs. And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014 -
Maybe instead of trying to define intelligence, does anyone have any good examples they can share with us?Originally posted by Mich the Tester View PostAll the Mensa members I've met are really sad. They sit around whining about how misunderstood intelligent people are. I have no time for that.

Agree. There are different types of intelligence. One of my friends would be considered a genius with a guitar and keyboard, he can play anything with additional embelishments after hearing it only once. Ask him to work out the change for 79p from a fiver and he really struggles though.Originally posted by SallyAnne View PostIt depends what you mean by intelligent.
Do you mean general knowledge? Common sense? The capacity to learn? Academinc achievements?
It's pretty hard to define
I'm anywhere between a 3 and a 7 I think. On here at least...if you measured me against the population of the place I grew up, or infact the place I live now, I'd be between an 8 and 11.
I'm an 8 to 10 with numerical, logical and mechanical reasoning. My verbal reasoning is less but the real hole in my intelligence involves directions. If it wasn't for GPS, I wouldn't be where I am today. Overall, I would probably rate myself as an average 5; I'm good at some things and bad at others.Comment

Of course, and that would suggest a high degree of emotional intelligence...Originally posted by Mich the Tester View PostAm I supposed to guess how thick the questioner is and give him the answer he wants?"See, you think I give a tulip. Wrong. In fact, while you talk, I'm thinking; How can I give less of a tulip? That's why I look interested."Comment

I took the test as I had some self esteem issues at the time, I was feeling unemployable. i thought having MENSA membership on my CV may be a good thing - then Mr P pointed out that only a tw@t would have it on their CV - and he was rightOriginally posted by Mich the Tester View PostAll the Mensa members I've met are really sad. I'm sorry, but I'll make no apologies for this

There was a story about a guy doing an IQ test as part of a job application. Out of the room full of applicants he was last to complete the test. The external invigilator picked up the pile of tests and told him he was too slow.
He asked imperiously 'Do you know who I am?' 'no i dont'
The chap shoved his paper into the pile, tipped it on the floor then ran out

I put myself in the 'can get there eventually' camp. I can go as deep as I need to given enough time, but I'm not so sure about quick.Originally posted by BrilloPad View PostStupid people who work hard are better than intelligent ones.Comment

That's why I didn't got for >10. When you're that smart, you learn to keep your head down.Originally posted by JamieMoles View PostWell as my last IQ test put me in the top 2% of the population I'm going to have to go with 10. Anyone who chooses > 10 needs shooting.
