This is what I believe happened:

Subject A felt offended with subject B over some minor transgression (I can't be arsed to check back what exactly). Subject A decided to thump chest at Subject B (beep horn). This is a direct threat to subject B.

Faced with this chest thumping, subject B must decide whether to back off or beat chest in return, to call As bluff or indicate (a possibly bluffed also) intention or willingness to allow the situation to escalate, perhaps to physical violence. Gets out iron bar and beats chest louder than A.

With this new information to hand, subject A must decide whether to back down to the returned chest beating, as his bluff did not work, or to trump it with harder chest beating. Subject A decides to back down. Situation resolved.

Just another day in the jungle.

He probably couldn't bothered to knife all 3 of you.

Think I'm kidding? If you're on your own then fair enough. However, if you're with a baby / partner, you're far better off eating humble pie and getting the hell out of there. Your wounded pride will heal quicker than an injury to your family.

I had a similar situation to you. Luckily for me, it ended OK but it rapidly spiraled out of control and changed he way I do things. It started for exactly the same reason as you - I innocently remonstrated in a typical middle class way (flash lights etc).
This just pushed the nutter and his mate over the edge to the extent that he got out and stood by my car litterally foaming at the mouth and shouting. While this was going on, his mate went to the back of his car and took out a metal pipe. I wonder what he was going to do with that? I saw the look of horror of the woman driving the car stuck behind these nutters as he got the pipe out.
Remember that this was at 1pm on a busy road. They had stopped to get out and were holding up traffic on their side while I was in a traffic jam on the other side with nowhere to go

The guy standing in the road ended it in the end by saying something like "you shouldn't start things if you've got your baby in the car". WTF? some sort of honour code?
My child was scared witless and had started to cry - that probably stopped things getting really nasty as it gave these nutters just the excuse to stop I suppose. His mate put the pipe back in the boot, and they both climbed in and drove off.
When I think about it, the scariest thing was that it happened with such an innocious gesture on my part - probably just like you.
I also clearly remember (to this day) - the look of horror of the woman driver behind them - as one of them got the pipe out of the boot.

Never reported it - I hope I never see those nutters again.
This isn't new I remember many years some agressive driver parping his horn for something so I gave him the two fingers, he got out of his car and came running over so I drove off. All part of English culture, always was and always will be. Admittedly he didn't have an iron bar, but I suspect this iron bar was meant for denting your car.
            I'm alright Jack

Well, I think what I and the other poster are alluding to, jungle rules etc., is that you were with a female of proven breeding ability. If she hadn't have been there then the incident would not have happened. So it is the situation, not the place.

              So the answer is, nowhere.

And it'll get worse, when the have-nots realise even what they think they have is nothing but an illusion too.
