It's up to society and the courts to pass a death sentence, otherwise we are back to the dark ages, where even then I doubt it was a death penalty for theft. The farmer was a murderer.
society and the courts can pass a death sentance ? thats a new one

Well, of course there would need to be a court case after someone was shot. That goes without saying. Yet, some miscreants just need to be put out of our misery. Why should we rely on the Police and Social workers and a pyramid of other busybodies, who no doubt are overstretched dealing with others who need culling, when the task is easily dealt with, on the spot, by a citizen with a gun?
Why stop at murder just for theft? Why not for any kind of annoying/criminal activity? And what about the legalised theft that occurs all the time to which we are all victim (e.g. bankers/lawyers/money lenders/just about everyone) and probably for sums far in in excess of what that gypo and his mates nicked?

Well, money lending is against Gods law, yes, legalised theft, and I think it should be stamped out.
That is a difficult one to use as an example, who is the perp? The one lending the money, or the one borrowing it. Both guilty.
A chap with an iron bar coming at you, because you tried to prevent an accident? Well, it is pretty easy to see who needs putting down.
As I say, I doubt it would have resolved itself in that way. People generally don't take kindly to being shot at...
It was only because he was armed with an iron bar and had his mate with him that he felt able to carry on in the way he did.
If he'd known that there was a possibility the other person was armed and was not afraid to use a weapon, just like himself. I feel sure the incident would never even have occurred.
Example: people tend to stop at traffic lights, not for fear of the penalty, but for their personal safety. Yet, when stopping at the traffic lights becomes more dangerous than running them, you get the sort of craziness you see in London.
too be honest, I think the iron bar stuff is a red herring. People can be extremely dangerous even without weapons.
The OP wants to know where we can go to get away from horrible people, not whats the best way to become one
A gym. Work out and get yourself fit.
It works very well. The people described are generally just bullies. If they perceive the outcome may well be bad for them they wouldn't bother in the first place.
There again, picking up a woman with child, may well have been the trigger for them. i.e. she is obviously capable of breeding etc..
Scenario 4 - (5?) - Man approaches your car holding an iron bar in a threatening manner. You hit him very hard with a ton or so of steel, propelled by an internal combustion engine.
