It is though. I had assumed your statement about SAP not surviving was sarcasm, rather than ignorance.

Also one of my best mates is a SAP consultant (working in ABAP). Lucrative though it is, even he does not claim it's fulfilling and exciting. As I grow older I find that very little of IT really is - pure play development being the only exception.
Hence why I have drifted off into more nmathematical areas.

I don't agree with this statement TBH. I think that SAP is one of the few areas that can stay interesting depending on which bit you work in. Ignoring the SAP cliché of "It's not an IT project" which is a whole other discussion. I've found that every project is very different due to the clients business requirements. One project may involve setting up the planning models for a company that makes a few highly configurable, high cost products and then the next is for a company that manufactures millions of the same thing daily even though they only sell them a few days of the year.

Not to mention that generally the projects are global in nature and so involve travelling to some excellent parts of the world.

        What's not exciting about that?

          What is SAP?

A tool for MD's who believe it is the path of least resistance to allow them to hold onto more of their turnover.

Mr IT person comes along with the smoke and mirrors promising all these wonderful outcomes.... then the client spends money saved on supporting the new applications on contractors...

Hmmm - horses for courses I suspect. Anything that involves business bulltulip bingo turns me off and ERP systems are too close to that part of the business.

Which is why SAP is as ubiquitous in large companies, as microsoft is in the home.

I think that's generally more due to the project management style and the clients decision to use a large consultancy to run the implementation.

                    wrong wrong and wrong again

it's not about project management etc

there are two choices for blue chip multinationals...

                    best of breed

                    or

                    one vendor

who in their right mind would ever go for best of breed and have a multitude of software suppliers and integration for their.... crm, ebp, financial, stock control, production management etc blahblah ? who would do this and take the associated risks of one vendor blaming the other when things don't work ? you want to put your name on such a decision ?

                    or

buy software for the whole enterprise from one vendor

and in this space, there are not many end to end enterprise software vendors to choose from

yes oracle have their fusion but isn't that just a mish mash of all the products they're aquired over the last few years which they try to hang together ?

there is no other choice but SAP ne c'est pas ?

                    Milan.
