Err no........... the current government by their constant courting of minority groups with benefits, culminating in such things as gay marriages that rank equal to heterosexual marriage have denegrated the cornerstone of our society. It's not all about tax. It's a morality question also IMO.

I understand why the system is the way it is, it is based on needs. But the way it is creates bad incentives.

The assessment of needs in the benefits system should be based on the assumption that a household will have two adults. It's then up to the individuals to organise their lives to make that happen. It doesn't matter whether it's husband-and-wife or two single mothers sharing a house. The point is that it costs twice as much (per person) to fund single-adult households, so the benefits system shouldn't subsidise that.

I think benefits, like tax, should be assessed on individual rather than a household basis. The individuals benefit needs should be based on the assumption that they will share the house with one other adult, however the actual number they share with should not affect the figure. If people want to save money by sharing a house with any number of other adults they should be able to do so without losing money.

      Well said !!!!!

Gay relationships are as commited and loving as hetro. Why shouldnt they be able to enjoy the benefits other couples have? Why should any marriage be regarded as superior in some way?
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

This is part of the problem. Gay marriages and gay adoption of children is now being given priority over heterosexual marriage adoption. Gay marriage is part of society and acceptable BUT should NEVER be ranked equal or higher than heterosexual marriage. Unfortunately you appear to be one of the 'dangerous' minority that agree with the promotion of gay marriage to be equal. Acceptable, but not equal IMO.

Didn't we have this argument on the evolution thread a while back?

Morality is personal, throughout history there have been societies that considered same sex relationships as everything from honourable through to despicable.

As pointed out it was under a Tory government that the tax advantages inherent to marriage were revoked, if memory serves it was them that killed off Mortgage Interest Relief at Source which probably didn't help family stability much.

I've already stated my reasons in my opening post. Please read and understand why there are good reasons to promote heterosexual marriage rather than minority groups. Our children are our future and gay couples do not create the children of that future.
