I think it is people in this country.... no offence but when it comes to wedding gifts.... it's a pretty poor show.

I went to 3 weddings at home last year and as a family, my brother and sister and my parents didn't give less than €500 between us.... and that was the norm!!! Having been here for so long I was shocked but my parents just laughed at me....

Dead right love. Don't forget that in the States - and to a lesser extend here - there are ethnic weddings like Greek or Jewish that you can only give cash (in $ 100 bills) in an envelope or even pin it on the bride or groom. A bit vulgar a purist may say, but a couple can end up with $ 20-30 k which is a nice tidy sum - no expenses either, as one (or both) of the families usually pay.

Getting a Registry Office ceremony, with only immediate family coming to it - about 7 people excluding me and him. Probably a stand-up buffet at a hotel somewhere and I'll be lucky to get a honeymoon. I'll end up paying for it as my father is no longer with us and my fiancee is unemployed at the moment!

I'll be lucky if it doesn't exceed a couple of hundred pounds.

Get married in Holland. A wedding at the town hall at 9am on Monday mornings is free. As it's Holland, that means they have a HUGE waiting list.

          These chappies love a bargain.
Oh, I’m sorry….I seem to be lost. I was looking for the sane side of town. I’d ask you for directions, but I have a feeling you’ve never been there and I’d be wasting my time.

A 'Dress Down Friday' theme civil wedding ceremony followed by a rollickin' knees up down at Maggies Cafe with a grubfest of Egg, Beans, Spam and Chips and Mr Squirty brown sauce washed down with bottomless pots of tea shouldn't cost too much!

With a few crates of Dom Perignon, that would have got mine and the missus's vote...

I've seen a number of putative marriages break down under the strain of organising the wedding. Probably a good thing, I suppose. We just said to the parents - organise what you will, all we care about is signing the register.

One thing I would say - you can't have too many flowers. And if you can, get them from the farms - you'll save a fortune.

Waste of money that could go to booze and food imo.

Many years ago I split up with someone the day the invites were due to go out. Lost 3K in deposits but a small price to pay compared to splitting up after getting married.

Happened to my sister-in-law. They kept trying to please everyone else, instead of themselves.

I could see if Chas n' Dave are still about for the band. They could probably use the work.
