I would disagree, the average smoker nipping outside into the cold air is probably more likely to suffer froms colds and flu, especially since they are screwing thier lungs up by smoking in the first place. Constatntly going from Hot -> Cold -> Hot environments makes you more susceptible to colds and flu.
    No it does not.

i have to bring your attention to this post made on the BBC 'have your say' site - says it all really

'i am a smoker so not happy about the ban their is ways and means around it than to totally ban it in public places even if i was a non smoker i would not agree it takes away our rights it is not going to stop me smoking so if that is the plan its not going to work i mean when people go to a pub or club they like to have a smoke their is going to be more people in the streets having a fag which means could lead to more police needed did they really think this threw?'

No it doesnt. However smoking does impair your immune system and damage the lining of the lungs and that *does* make you more susceptible to colds/flu/other airborne infections.

Add to this that normal behavior for smokers is to congregate together in confined spaces ( smoking rooms, shelters etc ) and you have groups of immuno-supressed people in close proximity. A recipe for the spread of infection and contagious diseases.

One thing this ban has NOT done is to remove the individual right of the smokers to just give up, and in so doing withhold their tax revenues from GB. They should just resolve to do that and move on knowing that they have restricted GB's ambitions whilst simultaneously improving their own health. Oh yes, and it is also worth noting that they will stop being seen by the majority as a set of selfish weak-willed smelly nicotine-addicted pariahs into the bargain.
So there you have it smokers, your chance to shine and to cock a snook at the Treasury's budget plans. Are you up to the task or are you just going to keep whining on in your raincoats?

Oh I'm loving this one! The day has finally arrived - rapture!

Smokers who were once so arrogantly proclaiming "if you don't like smoke, feck off home" are now forced out into the cold and wet like social outcasts.

Their moans just make feel even more smug.

If general taxes have to rise because less tobacco is consumed, it'll be worth it (although I think smoking will still continue really, weak willed etc.)

The "drinking will be targetted next" argument is fundamentally flawed. Smoking is banned on the back of smoking in the workplace laws. Passive drinking doesn't exist and drunken disorder is already an offence.

If the day ever arrives that we will be somehow restricted to 4 pints then I can cope (my liver could use a rest anyway).

Nights out without the smoky clothes and wheezing morning after cough are the reality from now on.

Could almost turn me into a NL voter (steady now..)!
