They should give up going to the pub (something you wont do).
They should go outside (something you wont do).
They can not open a pub which allows smoking where you could open a no smoking pub.
Where do you get smokers are selfish from?
Fook me you really are dense. The difference is that my drinking does not adversely affect the health and well-being of everyone else in the place. It's not rocket science you pillock. I don't see why I should have to give up going to the pub purely and simply because it has been legal for these nicotine junkies to pollute everyone's airspace for generations. It is shortly to become illegal and not before time, deal with it.

They could have done that years ago but selfishly never bothered and now it is going to bite them on the @rse. Good!

Smokers are a minority now anyway. I think in time market forces would have lead to smoke free pubs, what's happened here is the process has been helped. I don't like the idea of the goverment interfering in our behaviour either, but in a society you have to accept that sometimes the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, Jim.
According to smoe stats I read a little under 30% of the population (I assume adult but it could be entire) smoke. Of regular users of boozers this increases to a little over 60%.
You might want to use this to back up the view "nasty horrible smelly smokers drive us clean living folk out of pubs". That is certainly one view and could prove correct.
The evidence does not really support that though. Places where there is a smoking ban have generally seen a significant drop off in trade. The pattern in general is:-
- Non smokers (and smokers) who didn't use pubs don't start going to them
- Non smokers who did use pubs use them a little more frequently
- Smokers who did use pubs use them much less frequently
From my own viewpoint it does seem as though a blanket ban is a bit excessive. It seems reasonable to me that the default should be non smoking, but if a pub has more than one bar I don't really see why it shouldn't be allowed to offer both somoking and non smoking.

Dammit man! Do you have to spoil a perfectly good emotive argument with common sense?

You have this all arse about face you tit. Smokers have been exercising their freedom of choice for years, it is you that has not. They have built smoking pubs but you have chosen to drink in them.
A smokers dirnking does not affect anyone either, it is their smoking and if you dont like the smell or what is does to your health then go elsewhere.
I dont like drinking in pubs full of Jocks but I dont want them banned, I will just go elsewhere.
Enough pubs have banned dirty work clothes, why not smoking?
If you and your anti smoking nazis had made your choice there would be no need for a ban.
Nobody has ever asked you to give up going to the pub.
I am just suggesting that you could have chosen a number of actions so as not to be bothered by smokers. You have singulalry failed to choose any of those actions.
Now you are forcing those actions (actions which you would not do) on others. Not only are you forcing them either outside or home, but you are also removing the option from them of even considering opening an establishment where they can "enjoy" their habit.
I knew you wouldnt understand the argument.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

Step back, have a think and adjust my own own attitude from time to time
You have this all arse about face....lots of meaningless guff deleted
So to follow your logic, if a subset of pub patrons chose to eat beans and cabbage 3 times a day and walked into your pub farting their arses off making your eyes water and your clothes stink, your solution would be rather than kick them out for being unreasonable, you should exercise your democratic right to go and stand outside in the rain to avoid having to smell the gases is it?
Despite a litany of pointless tripe that you have spouted over the years, this latest nonsense pushes even your boundaries.
You ARE AtW and I claim my £5!

I think in time market forces would have lead to smoke free pubs, what's happened here is the process has been helped
You see that's the "problem" for the anti smoking brigade, market forces tried the no smoking pubs and they did not work because the non smokers want everything THEIR way
If you remember about 9 years ago witherspoons turned all their pubs totally non smoking.
At this time I was working at a place with 3 pubs in front it, one nice clean whitherspoons and two normal (well actually pretty grotty) pubs, before the ban witherspoons was doing the best by far, after the ban it's trade went down by at least 50% because everyone, smokers and non smokers alike changed to the other two pubs
Now many if not majority of witherspoons seem to have a smoking area (at least until Sunday)
And that is one of the major reasons I object to the ban, if smoke bothered the non smokers THAT much, things like what witherspoons tried would have worked a lot better and if it had worked lots of others would have followed suit and voluntary non smoking pubs would be all over the place. But no, non smokers want everything their way, smokers have to change not them
My other objection is one of the stated reasons for this ban, aka "protect the health and safety of the staff in pubs" sorry but for me that is total and utter crap, if you object to smoke don't go to work in a pub. Just like if you object to killing don't join the army, if you object to running the risk of being stabbed or shot don't join the police, if you don't like touching sick people or touching blood, piss, tulip don't become a doctor/nurse, if you don't want to increase risks of getting cancer don't go work in a nuclear plant

Actually that is exactly what you should do and you probably already do it
Or you never walked into a pub, not really liked the look of the other patrons (dependant of whatever your bias is) and just gone somewhere else?
You seem to ignore one thing totally here, it is not your pub, it's the publican's and it's up to him (or at least will be until Sunday) what kind of clientele he wants on his premises
If they really wanted to ban smoking why not ban the sale of ciggies?
No it's better to torment..
The maddest thing I saw the other week was going to a civic centre to see some comedy. Big sign says no smoking on all council property, next to it a working fag machine!
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.
But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”
