Oh, and (even bigger yawn) Old Trafford is just across the water!!
About 15 mins by tram from Manc. city centre.
In Manc city centre , Urbis http://www.urbis.org.uk/ is quite interesting. Plus you can grab a fantastic lunch in Wagamama opposite!Comment

Shopping = Trafford center
Museums = museum of science and industry, urbis, whitworth street gallery
Night time = cloud 23 in the hilton hotel (on the 23rd floor), sugar lounge on deansgate locks, panacea just on john dalton street just off deansgate
