Excellent City, all of the museums and shops quoted are good. Plenty of good restaurants too The Town Hall is well worth a visit (I kid you not) great architecture, three lovely spiral staircases (as you go up them, feel under the hand rail, that is where they concealed the gas pipes for the original gas lighting_. Murals by Ford Madox Brown in the grand hall, plus a huge organ (pandering a bit to the perves there) lots of very grand rooms.
Salford Quays is good too (I know that is not Manchester City but only a short tram ride away). The Arch in China Town, the Manchester wheel was back but may have gone again.

I totally agree with spacecadet.. head towards west didsbury for a decent meal and a nice pint without having the great unwashed anywhere near you..
oh its Greens (vegetarian restaurant), the Lime Tree (decent english food) and there's also a few enw cocktail bars opened up.. i live in west didsbury
I'd head into the Northern Quarter for drinks, again its true, if you have no idea where your going or what decent bars there are there then the area is not for you, i.e no idiots, no paupers, no drugged up wide boys, just friendly people looking for a great night out..
Bars in the Northern Quarter to try and find..
Bluu - look for the hooker boudoir downstairs, great meals
Odd Bar - great for mid afternoon snacks/munchies, mini cinema downstairs
Bar Centro - decent music, good european beer
Bar Fringe - dont ask the locals for some "Flash", you might be surprised
Socio Rehab - one of the best (and hardest to find) cocktail bars in the north imho
Moon Bar - the most hidden away bar ever but great cocktails, great food and a hidden treasure
Decent restaurants include:
Le Petit Blanc - Raymond Blancs place
El Rincon - fantastic spanish tapas
Greens - 100% veggie
went to Manchester last week for work, just happened the GF was there as well, we went to Cannal Street area which is the Gay area apparently, it was good though, went to a place for dinner called Velvet, very good food.
