As an aside, curiously CUK is one of the few forums I've ever used that doesn't seem to have any significant discussion about football, or even sport...

The England cricket team currently has a New Zealander as coach. Since the late 90s, four of the eight test coaches have been foreign and heaven forbid we've had two Australian coaches across all formats. I don't remember this amount of little Englander vitriol accompanying their appointments.

Maybe it has something to do with how successful the team is? Eddie Jones, for all his gobbieness, did a reasonable job with the rugby team.
Or is it actually to do with a specific nationality, and the specific sport?

My memory may be faded, but I don’t recall England Rugby fans or Cricket fans rioting in the stands in the 80s & 90s. Nor do I think I’ve seen them putting lit flares up their backsides or trashing towns after losses (or wins).

It's more to do with the inherent and totally irrational tribalism that seems to bind most serious football fans. It manifests all over the place, from a user threatening violence if I didn't put his screen back to a headache-inducing virulent green (he was a Glaswegian Celtic supporter it seems) to someone placing attendance at his matches above the day job as Prime Minister.

Never understood it myself! Too much the loner I suspect...

I always thought it was because a football match tends to be a congregation of people of low social economic backgrounds. So violence is bound to happen.
