In what world does cutting inheritance tax help the current situation?

If you're scared about inflation then stay the course and bank the additional taxes and reduce debt. Let's be serious, you have lost the next election, you are standing down as an MP at the next election. Do that novel thing of doing what's actually in the interest of the country for once.

It doesn't help all those who have put their inheritance into trusts (e.g. Fitzwilliam Trust Corporation) to avoid paying tax.

It won't though. Those who currently care about IHT are already voting and will always vote Tory. If the economy was ticking along then sure, the temporarily embarrassed millionaires would be all for it.

There are countless other taxes that could be cut that would actually get votes. Going into an election waving 'look IHT down, we are party of lowering tax!' is a wide open goal for Labour to just start reading off taxes that impact everyone, council tax, income tax etc.

It serves a purpose for those of short term memory.
They lower inheritance tax, etc, then lose the election. The next government raises it back up, and for the next 50 years, it is the government who raised it who are seen as "always raising taxes", even though they will have undone a 6 month tax drop.
It's all about perception, nothing about what is good for the people who live and pay taxes in the UK.
