    Another tree cut down...

    for no damn reason.

    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...ently-cut-down

A police investigation has been launched into the felling of one of the most photographed trees in the country, the Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland, which was found cut down on Thursday morning.

The world famous tree, voted tree of the year in a Woodland Trust competition in 2016 and featured in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, is thought to have been deliberately felled.

Photographs taken on Thursday morning show it appears to have been sawed at the base of the trunk with a chainsaw. The sycamore tree, estimated to be several hundred years old, had previously stood in a small picturesque valley in Northumberland national park.

Good sycamore are just glorified weeds and it spoils the view of the wall.

Is there a bit of the trunk missing? It's National Trust land so wondering what the motive could be. Rich dick wanting bit of furniture made out of a iconic tree?

You don't just turn up with a professional petrol powered chainsaw and take out a substantial tree in a remote spot like that. ANPR and other cameras should be able to track likely suspects so I'd expect the culprit to be found. When they are they need to be cut of at their trunk by their chainsaw

Crazy situation that. Can't have been done for any other reason than bragging rights at the pub and it's so hot now no one can brag about it. Such a shame

It was nice looking tree in a nice location.

But there are apparently 3 billion trees in the UK

And 3 Trillion trees in the world

They should auction off the remains and use the money to plant a replacement.

This reminds of the time the blue peter garden was vandalised.
