Very poor from Dianne Abbot but I have little doubt many rubbing their hands together with glee have made similar errors of judgement on public forums which may one day return to haunt them.

She wrote a letter, which was published in The Observer, in response to Tomiwa Owolade's early column in the same paper, where he argues that "... racism in the UK needs also to account for racism against Jewish people, Traveller communities and Irish people."

Tomiwa Owolade claims that Irish, Jewish and Traveller people all suffer from “racism” (“Racism in Britain is not a black and white issue. It’s far more complicated”, Comment). They undoubtedly experience prejudice. This is similar to racism and the two words are often used as if they are interchangeable.

It is true that many types of white people with points of difference, such as redheads, can experience this prejudice. But they are not all their lives subject to racism. In pre-civil rights America, Irish people, Jewish people and Travellers were not required to sit at the back of the bus. In apartheid South Africa, these groups were allowed to vote. And at the height of slavery, there were no white-seeming people manacled on the slave ships.

Apparently, she thinks racism is defined by prejudice and lack of social, economic and political power. I wasn't massive aware of the Traveller community having any of those powers to any degree. Furthermore, it suggests the ZOG type trope.

Loads. Read the archives about how the police and local politicians knew about it, but were reluctant to take action, until investigative journalists published the story.

A lot of Jews also consider themselves to be non-white. It's always sparked a discussion in our household when filling in the 'diversity' bit of various forms, my kids generally put 'white' but I know a lot who don't.

And then we have Sephardic Jews....not a 'white' face amongst them.
