As contractors surely we all flip our motors long before the first MOT is due?

So they are consulting the general public that don't have a clue and will generally do their best to either avoid it regardless of the safety issues? Seems a little bit crazy that doesn't it?

I'm amazed that a car over 25 years old no longer needs an MOT - they're surely the ones that are more likely to have bits fall off on the M4 at 70 mph.

I used to drive a 1973 Saab 96 back in the mid 90s & that needed a MOT but was exempt from road tax. Not sure when this law changed.

It was K reg - may have been 1971 not '73

It's 40 years before you become MOT and tax exempt these days.

You could argue it would be would be prudent to start doing mandatory MOT/Health checks on any driver that has held a licence for over 40 years rather than the car. We are forever seeing news articles of old drivers only handing their licences in AFTER they've caused or had a bad accident.

People with those sort of cars are the ones who break down in the middle of the non-motorway road, ask for help to push it to the side, roll up their sleeves and start fixing it.

I would recommend computer tests with steering wheel, gearstick and pedals (arcade style) in Tesco etc. that at first the Elderly, then medical risk, then high risk youngsters then finally all drivers can take every 5 year or as appropriate.

By the way being male and under 25 puts you in the highest risk group but starting with them would cause a riot.

Also an enforced eye test for over 50s would be a good idea maybe build it in the simulator.
