The National Grid's emergency blackout plans to help conserve power amid shortages and avoid winter blackouts could be launched as soon as tomorrow. A decision will be finalised by 2.30pm today (Nov 28), according to the National Grid, on whether to roll out its Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) from Tuesday.
The activation of the scheme would see Brits be rewarded for using less power during peak times. It was announced earlier this month and has been developed to ease strain on the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) by allowing it to access additional flexibility when national demand is at its highest - which is said to be during winter.
In the past two weeks, the scheme has been tested twice but has not yet been operated as a live event, according to The Mirror. A spokesperson for National Grid ESO said: "What has happened is that the ESO has issued an indicative notice on BMRS to alert demand flexibility service providers that we may issue a requirement at 2:30pm for the use of DFS tomorrow night.
