This is my second account - my first account got permabanned on my first post for "sp" (presumably spam rather than spelling). I think that was a bit of a harsh decision by the mods, but I can understand why it happened, so I handled things a bit differently with this account.
First time around, I'd been lurking for a while, but I didn't bother registering for an account until I was ready to post something. I also wanted to wait until I had something useful to add (in one of the professional forums). After a while, someone asked about accommodation in London (near a particular station); I'd stayed at a hostel near there, so I posted the name, a link to their website, and a brief review. From memory, I basically said "It's cheap, but a bit grotty, and don't leave your valuables out of arm's reach", so this wasn't glowing praise. However, looking at this from the mod's point of view, this was a brand new account which immediately posted a link to a commercial website, so I can see why I looked like a spambot searching for keywords.
For my second account, I registered and then continued lurking for a while (logged in) before I posted my first comment. I was then careful not to include any links in my first 10-20 posts, and I avoided posted anything that might look like an advert until I'd established myself as a real person.Comment
