Benched for the first time since 2018

Other than a few days between contracts, hit end of a contract last week and didn't ask for a renewal.

At some point will have to start applying and looking but right now this feels awesome.

Right now it's so cold and miserable in Manchester that I'm looking forward to a roasting.

Given that you are voluntarily taking the summer off I wouldn't call that benched.

Benched is when you want to work but aren't working...

Given he hasn't taken any time off since 2018, I'd call it sad.

He might have had a contract like I did in the noughties, I rocked up about 9:30 did an hour or so's work, went to the pub for a nice lunch & pool then home about 5pm occasionally via the office.

Surprised the client offshored us, but they went from 1 outage a year to one a week of 24 hours...
