A Russian opposition politician has shared heart-rending images of children detained in the back of a police van after taking part in anti-war protests.

Despite the Kremlin having no tolerance for dissent, protesters have defied Moscow and taken to the streets against President Vladimir Putin's illegal war in Ukraine, risking jail and even treason charges.

Almost 7,000 people have so-far been detained by Russian police in as many as 50 cities, according to OVD-Info - an organisation that tracks protests in the country.

According to photographs shared on Tuesday by opposition politician Ilya Yashin, children are among those that have been snatched by officers.

The pictures show at least three children - no older than Primary School age - sitting in the back of what is reportedly a Moscow police van holding flowers and banners. One reporter said they went to lay flowers at the city's Ukrainian embassy.

One girl is shown holding a sign that says 'No War' in Russian. Small Russian and Ukrainian flags have been painted around the words. To the right, the two flags are drawn followed by a small pink heart, to says 'Russia plus Ukraine equals love'.

Three boys have been rushed to a regional hospital after being wounded by apparent Russian shelling in the besieged port city of Mariupol.
One of the boys had lost his legs, and died soon after arrival, according to an AP reporter at the scene.

The other two were rushed into surgery and then intensive care. The boys had been playing soccer near a school when the shelling hit, family members told the AP.

A woman with severe wounds to her face from the same strike was also brought to the hospital.

Russian forces have inflicted “colossal destruction” in the Ukrainian port of Mariupol after “14 hours of non-stop attacks”, the city's mayor said on Wednesday.

"There are many wounded and unfortunately many civilian dead, women, children, old people," Vadym Boichenko said in a live broadcast on Ukrainian television.

Currently listening to another deluded caller on the radio. This time the guy is actually Russian. Yesterday there were two British males.

Apparently the Ukrainians want the Russians there to free them from a neo-nazi regime. All the media channels around the world from the BBC to Fox News to Al Jazeera are spreading propaganda. The EU countries don't have independent autonomy and just follow the US.

Just like many people in the UK believed Blair when he said that Iraq had WMD and could hit the UK in 45 minutes.
