Planned well in advance, while lockdown rules were in place.

Downing Street Christmas party had been planned for weeks

The No 10 Christmas party was planned for three weeks with invitations sent to officials and advisers on WhatsApp while the UK was in full lockdown, The Times has been told.

Invitations to last year’s event were circulated at the end of November, asking people to attend the press office’s “secret Santa” gathering with an exchange of gifts. The invitation said it would be held on December 18 and that there would be food and wine.

And now the Downing Street press chief may or may not have offered to quit for handing out awards at party he didn't attend because it didn't happen anyway.

PM's press chief Jack Doyle offered to quit over party, source say

Boris Johnson's press chief offered to quit after it emerged he had given a speech at a Downing Street party held when Covid restrictions were in place, two separate sources have told the BBC.

The sources said the PM had refused to accept Jack Doyle's resignation.

Downing Street insists Mr Doyle did not offer to quit, and the PM has since declared his "full confidence" in him.

I'm waiting for The Telegraph to reveal some dirt on the "not" party.

They're just so stupid to put themselves at risk knowing full well that this sort of thing would cause big problems if/when it gets out. Surely they get training on how to avoid this sort of thing.
It's not even what they did - in most cases they could have got it out of the news within a day or two with an admission and a bit of contrition. No one really cares that much pabout parties, eye tests or wallpaper, but what does it tell us when Bojo's instinctive response to all of these things is to lie about them? If he lies about these trivialities, what else does he lie about? (everyone, of course). You simply can't have a PM who won't tell the truth when it doesn't suit him.

Pics are coming, that's a certainty. Anything less than Boris in a party hat at the head of a conga line and I'm going to be disappointed tho.

EXCLUSIVE: Boris Johnson pictured hosting Number 10 Christmas quiz ‘in breach of Covid laws’
Boris Johnson faces more questions over a Downing Street Christmas quiz he hosted while London was under strict Tier 2 "no mixing" restrictions - as staff knocked back Tesco booze

Boris Johnson has been accused of personally breaking Covid laws by hosting a Christmas quiz in No10 last year.

The Prime Minister was pictured on screen, sitting underneath a portrait of Margaret Thatcher as he read out questions.

A source said many staff huddled by computers, conferring on questions and knocking back fizz, wine and beer from a local Tesco Metro.

In one office, the insider said, there were four teams, each made up of six people.

It was December 15 – three days before a gathering now being probed – and the PM was flanked by two members of his top team, although they were not drinking.

One was wearing a Santa hat and the other draped in tinsel.

                    Turns out it definitely did.

                    Just not that one.

Downing Street staff were invited to a drinks party in the Number 10 garden during the height of nationwide lockdown to "make the most of the lovely weather".

An email shared exclusively with ITV News provides the first evidence of a party on May 20, 2020, when the rest of the country was banned from meeting more than one other person outdoors.

The email was sent by the Prime Minister's Principal Private Secretary Martin Reynolds to over a hundred employees in Number 10, including the Prime Minister's advisors, speechwriters and door staff.

In it, Mr Reynolds - a senior No 10 civil servant who has run Boris Johnson's private office since October 2019 - says:

                    "Hi all,

"After what has been an incredibly busy period we thought it would be nice to make the most of the lovely weather and have some socially distanced drinks in the No10 garden this evening.

"Please join us from 6pm and bring your own booze!"

ITV News understands around 40 staff gathered in the garden that evening, eating picnic food and drinking. Crucially, they included the Prime Minister and his wife Carrie Johnson.

So how come it took a year and a half for people to notice there was an illegal gathering with 100 invites, many of who are now saying how worrying they found it? It's almost like people have known for ages and been waiting until there was a good time to make it public.
