The Government is in crisis talks with the energy industry in a bid to ease soaring costs of fuel.

Energy companies are calling for a multibillion-pound bailout after the prices of wholesale gas have rocketed by 70% since last month.

There are fears taxpayers will have to foot the bill to stop the collapse of dozens of gas and electricity companies as a result.

Business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng is set to hold emergency meetings with energy suppliers today as they are expected to call for a huge Government package to support them through the winter.

We have spent decades buying energy from France and Russia instead of making ourselves self sufficient its hardly a surprise when world energy markets go mad we end up paying the most.

We have known for decades wind/solar/tidal energy were viable all we need is storage and we could turn off most fossil fuel stations but we have not invested.

Gas prices are identical across Europe and the UK
UK electricity prices are higher but that's because 3GW of interconnect cables that keeps things in sync are currently broken (well 1 is broken, 1 is delayed).

As for the fertiliser plants - a lot of that is internal politics, the plants until March got subsidised gas and that subsidy went. The plants want it back and will probably get it as we need the CO2 byproduct...
