    DOOM: Lake District

"Lake District holiday four times more expensive than Italy amid staycation boom

Price of UK trips grew over two years as more Britons opt for domestic breaks due to Covid travel restrictions, according to Which?

A holiday in the Lake District is now four times more expensive than Lake Garda as staycation costs soar, a Which? study has found.

The consumer champion said that costs for private holiday accommodation in the UK have increased by 41 per cent on average since 2019.

More people have been staying in the UK for their summer holidays this year on account of continuing international travel restrictions, leading to complaints over the high cost of UK holidays and the risk of prices being disproportionately inflated in the face of increased demand.

Which? looked at the average cost of private holiday rentals, hotels and of taking a holiday in various popular UK destinations with comparable locations overseas, and found that in almost every case, taking a holiday in the UK was more expensive.

When Which? looked at the cost of seven nights this August in a highly rated hotel in Lake Garda, Italy, it was nearly a quarter of the price of a comparable holiday in the Lake District: £631 for Lake Garda, compared to £2,381 for Lake Windermere."

Those numbers look highly suss. In both places if you pick hotels from the top 10 in the area it's coming back at 2k for each but if you go for a mid range the Lake district is coming out a little cheaper and then there is the budget ones you can still have a great time at either place which the lake district seems to have the better and cheaper options.. Some selective picking of hotels to make the numbers look like a news story IMO

That said, paying the same price for one holiday in gauranteed glorious sunshine or the other where it's pot luck with the odds on it pissing down for 7 days solid I know where I'd rather be spending my money.

For an equivalent of what I'd stay at overseas, it can be more expensive to holiday in the UK. Plus there's the added downside of UK people being wherever you go.

It's almost like "Supply & Demand" is part of what determines prices. If something is in short supply, the prices go up.
Maybe those at the Torygraph aren't aware, but if you've got 10 rooms and 9 are full, you can't build an extra 100 rooms in 2 weeks.

But higher prices in the sunny uplands is one of the benefits of being an island nation.
…Maybe we ain’t that young anymore

Wages only go up if you're a London bus driver who relocates to Yeovil to work for Lidl.

The problem is, my dear vetran, is that the main structural issue in this (and almost all other) countries is dumb people like you.

And it’s not like you want THAT fixed.
