I only vaguely remember it. Yes I am older than you. I suspect it was at my grandmother's house. She was definitely a product of her time.

I will stick with Fireman Sam or the excellent "the Tiger who came for tea" (which is weird enough) for the little one's bed time reading.

Good film as well. Even if like me you have to watch it and the only subtitles are in German - when the actors are speaking Swiss dialect, French or English.

My grandmother was of another era, but parents were pretty on the ball. I enjoyed the Silver Sword, but I really didn't like Nicholas Fisk (not NickFitz) nor Leon Garfield. Mind you, by the time I was eleven I was on adult science fiction - now that really fsked me up..

Pepe le Pew is an intresting one .... if we see him as an animal, acting the way animals act, then he is acting completely naturally (rape in the animal kingdom is 'normal' - just go down to your local park pond and watch the male mallards )

If however we are going to anthropomorphise Pepe, then yes he's a dodgy character that needs a restraining order.

Pepe was a skunk. The cat was a cat. It would take quite a sordid mind to equate the comedy value there to be condonement (is that a word?) of sexual violence.

I think the risk is that you're playing these to children and you could normalise this behaviour. Although my personal anecdotal evidence is that it didn't do me any harm, although there are many of my ex girlfriends who may argue otherwise

Slightly off topic, but not completely, I always found Open All Hours offensive. As a kid I hated Ronnie Barker's character. Reason being I had (still have) a stutter and this show was really offensive (I still find it offensive to people who suffer from stuttering).

Thankfully for me there was another kid in school with a stutter and he got labelled 'Granvil' and not me .. but he did suffer for years.

I've learned to live with my stutter and can manage it, but it is a (kind of*) disability and really should not be mocked.

* I say 'kind of', so please don't get too triggered!

The general consensus is that many of these things are in the past and indeed modern versions are thankfully more inclusive and acceptable. Most of us just want to pop a warning on it, cut the worst out and move on. Some people want to call these out continuously to cause outrage, surely we should ask why? Are you not curious and worried it might not be positive?

By the way this thread also discussed a mouse blacking up and the depiction of African cannibals, plus of course the Maid/Lady of the house.
