T'was ever thus. For an eternity it seemed BMW drivers were in a league of their own for driving like complete knobs, then Audi drivers stole the crown for a while.

Based on the last couple of years, I'd say BMW drivers have regained their crown but being pushed hard by Ranger Rover drivers.

They could solve the main problem with smart motorways (signage that is easy for the selfish to ignore) by having those rising bollards pop-up, doing the job of the traffic cone wombles. If there are all the sensors in the lanes to detect a broken down vehicle automatically they can detect moving vehicles and raise the bollards at the right place at the right time. Sorted.

Though I expect the easier solution is to concede it's not fit for purpose and change them to toll monitoring cameras via ANPR, which may have been the long term goal all along.
Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down. Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

I'll bet they either don't track, or will never release the stats around how many breakdowns now result in an accident compared to before.
I didn't renew a good contract because it would have taken me into winter and I couldn't face those M62 roadworks in the dark - they were death traps then.

I'm sure somewhere it's got to work as planned. It doesn't around NW Manchester ringroad. It's the busiest junction in Europe or something so an extra lane and speed reduction isn't going to help.

But then again between Junc 31 and 28 is what I used to term 'death valley', for some reason always loads of accidents there. BTW in anwser to the death while broken down: you're supposed to get off the motorway as soon as possible even if there is a hard shoulder and not like some numb nuts stand in front of your vehicle, but behind it. That way if it gets clipped it goes away from you!
BTW there isn't just the person in the broken down car that can die.

Some years ago I was driving at night through a contraflow with a truck tailgating me. There was some metal building debris in the road that punctured the front os tyre. Fortunately there was a gap in the roadworks barrier to escape but only just.

I have mentioned the day back in 2003 when I was in an accident on the M62 that closed it west bound on a Monday morning for 2 hours.

A transit behind the car behind me didn't slow down to tailgate the east bound accident that had recently occurred.

The transit hit the car behind me that sent me at a 45 degree angle into the barriers and from there across all 3 lanes until the smoke disappeared and I could see where I was and bring the car to a halt.

Since then all contracts or work in Manchester has been via the train

Indeed I found it smooth on the way up being 33% larger and having fewer cars because of the Pandemic might have something to do with that.

However when it went wrong oh boy!

Oil spillage closed part of M1 in Derbyshire - Derbyshire Live

apparently delays of 20 minutes. We must have had funny extra slow minutes we could see the spill when we stopped and waited 45 minutes it took us an hour in all. They then passed 4 lanes of traffic over a 2 lane off ramp with no traffic control.

no danger with the current designers.
