after 15 years financial experience 9 of which was a contractor I can tell you that contracting seems well and truly finished - If it wasnt covid it was all the IR35 changes and if it wasnt that it was brexit and roles being moved to the EU

I always laughed when reading this site when people would say they reason they were contractors was because they could not put up with "permie performance ratings" I found that hilarious given it was twice a year and often thought it was secret code for convicning themselves of something

For me contracting was always about the money and the take home pay - I never in my life thought it was anything else

Trying to go perm now is not because I want to but because contracting for banks is finished and the rates are gone and the tax breaks are gone

Am I safer as a perm in a bank - No
Am I poorer as a perm from take home - Yes

I don't do office politics - I'm actively allergic to it.

Which is why I've spent years getting myself into a position where I'm completely save from it.

I loved contracting and the day rate I was on, but same as you, I saw the writing on the wall a few years ago and went perm. I am happy with the decision and think what you are doing is sensible, albeit in the middle of Covid...

Same as you, it’s the money when contracting. I tried to convince myself it was about seeing other banks and no performance reviews, but at the later stages I was booking an £18k invoice for a months work that included a long weekend holiday... trying to say it was anything else would be a disservice to newbies here.

Implementation project management in a specialist niche. Let's just say I wouldn't be keen to get out of bed for £650 pd, although I guess I would if push came to shove.

Sorry things haven't worked out so well for yourself, but it's not ""contracting" that's the problem. It's you. Time to take ownership of your own failures.

When people say "contracting seems well and truly finished", I think what they mean is "contracting as way to work like an employee but be paid significantly more is well and truly finished".

Those running proper/traditional consultancy can continue to win work, but it is obviously a bit harder at present.

I think if you are uber specialist at xyz it can still be great.

But as a whole in real life... people need to think VERY carefully.

I had a colleague who asked me for a coffee and was seriously thinking about ditching permie to become a contractor. About a year ago, quoting a £750 a day role.

Did the usual up to him etc but then gave him my honest thoughts of contracting now vs years ago and wary of reading old positive threads... luckily he decided to stay. Thank god, can you imagine a newbie contractor Programme Manager in this market!?!
