Our economy is dysfunctional, with many businesses hooked on a conveyor belt of cheap labour from overseas. With that cut off, if the business model was sound it should sustain an increase in wages and attract local workers. For the unemployed it should make sense financially to come off benefits and work so there may need to be adjustments in the benefits system. The fact that we need to top people up with tax credits screams that something is deeply wrong with our system.

If a business can only sustain itself on minimum wage / or less, then it is not viable in a Western economy.

Probably the government will slightly raise the minimum wage and on the other hand will massively reduce/cut benefits and jsa.

Unemployed will either start working or starve to death.

In central London. All I see is food places hiring almost 100% non uk nationals on £6 per hour. Starbucks, Pret A Manger, Eat, Itsu etc.

All the indigenous unemployed are going to come off benefits and take these jobs for sure. And how much housing benefit will they need to actually break even on their salary minimum wage salary after the £800 a month is paid to their landlord for a double room in a house share in zone 3?

It amazes me how how prices still rise. Its already £500k for a modest 3 bed terrace in zone 6. Almost double 10 years ago. How much higher will it get £1million for a 3bed. You wont be able to pay it off in a lifetime

People should never be worse off working than on benefits, it costs a fair bit just to be at work e.g. clothes, transport, lunch so there needs to be a higher cut off. It should not be beyond the wit of man to create a system that looks after those that can't work but makes sure it is always a better option to work. It would be interesting trialing universal basic income in a few areas to see if it makes a difference.

There's always this ridiculous idea touted that migrants only do the jobs that lazy Brits don't want to do. Competition does not work like that, taking in many foreign workers also impacts those that do want to work.

And why should manual workers in a fairly wealthy country have to compete with those from low wage economies anyway to subsidise the profits of business owners? They should get their fair share of the nation's wealth.

It beats me that people who view themselves as socialist are the ones promoting mass immigration. Leftist attitudes were a lot more sensible back in the 70s, the Labour party put British workers first and were very much against internationalism.

What unemployed?

Employment is at record levels.

The 8.5 Million "economically inactive" that Priti Patel was going on about are not unemployed and available to work.

• Students who can't work full time or even part time in many cases.
• The retired who don't want to work
• The long term sick who can't work, despite the best efforts of the DWP to starve them into it.
• Those caring for families and homes, many because the social care system or lack of child care leaves them no choice
• "Others" who may be actively looking for a job but don't have one yet, or who are waiting to start one, or who simply do not need to work for whatever reasons.
