    Interesting report from the Guardian:

    Two things happening at once:

    1) Investment vehicles awaiting appreciation.

    2) Jobs retreating from economically challenged areas.

Prices are usually dependent on the availability of work and what it pays local to the property.

That doesn't sound a lot to me but it works out at 250k a house which sounds suspiciously close to the national average so I'd question if that's a realistic figure they quote.

Does a house or flat rented out on Airbnb for really short terms count as empty or occupied?

The picture used in the article is not a house. The cattle would even be offended.

The number of long-term vacant properties – those that have been empty for at least six months – rose by 5.3% to 216,186 in the 12 months to October,

“All local authorities in England have the power to charge homes that have been empty for at least two years an extra 50% on their council tax bill, and now from April, they can increase this to 100%.”
