I hope something does come of this. His attitude warrants some kind of serious punishment. I understand that she was on her phone but the appropriate response to someone doing that is to slam on your brakes and avoid a collision.

The whole cyclist argument about 'not wanting to stop' does not apply to public roads. I don't care if you don't want to stop - or the momentum/speed you've built up. If the light goes red, and/or a pedestrian steps into the road you stop - end of...

Interestingly, I checked his Strava account & he'd wiped all his rides. Perhaps they didn't tell a 'good story' of his general ride behaviour?

If it is going to make any meaningful contribution to the reduction of danger on the roads, our criminal justice system needs to recalibrate away from the prejudice that motoring is innocuous and cycling dangerous and towards controlling the behaviour of those imposing greatest risk.

Some press reports were full of language (“ploughed into” etc) that is seldom seen when a car driver (or as was being dealt with in a nearby court, a speeding motorcycle rider) runs down a pedestrian.

If it is going to make any meaningful contribution to the reduction of danger on the roads, our criminal justice system needs to recalibrate away from the prejudice that motoring is innocuous and cycling dangerous and towards controlling the behaviour of those imposing greatest risk.

That'll be the ones in control (to some extent) of the machine doing the damage then... aka all of them.

But - and it's a big but - I've seen lots of cyclists put themselves and others in danger by ignoring what's happening around them (and that includes me having to crash stop a four ton motorhome in the middle of a busy roundabout to miss some dickhead that thought he had a perfect right to turn left in front of me without looking). The ones that have tunnel vision, headcams and earphones are the real danger, not the 90% that take even rudimentary care.

And yes, I've also seen drivers put cyclists at risk, and they are equally moronic. However they are at least identifiable. If boyo had kept going and not stopped to blame the poor woman he hit, he'd likely still be free.

You really don't get it do you? The thing is that in London pedestrians are always jumping out in front of bikes, cars, lorries. Cyclists are silent - hopefully soon all vehicles will be electric then pedestrians will have to take more care.

Coming off worse and getting injured/killed is the current penalty it would seem. I'm not saying pedestrians are blameless - especially phone zombies. The point I'm making here is around this cyclist's attitude and how he was riding.

Did he fail to stop or refuse to stop? Cyclists don't like to stop because they lose their speed and momentum. This would be relevant if it was a race situation but on the public roads that everyone is using as a means of getting from A to B everyone has to stop whether they want to or not.

No one wants to stop - everyone has to - including pedestrians.

Should be like Germany then. If you cross the road without due care and attention then you are primarily at fault and the driver or rider can sue (personal liability insurance is quite big here). You might have noticed that Germans don't cross the road unless the little man is green because, basically its against the law and not only could you get fined but if you cause an accident then you're at fault

I agree with all that. Especially about cyclists behaving like morons. And when they get hit they should take part of the blame.

Same applies for pedestrians though. Chap I work with had big injuries due to pedestrians jumping in front of him in Shepherds bush. They ran off. They should be equally identifiable.

Often the cyclist is injured when in collision with a pedestrian as I posted above.

Sometimes cyclists are unwilling to stop - and blame should be apportioned for that.

My father died when I was 6. I really feel sorry for the children and clearly they want someone to blame. And the bloke has the majority of the blame - a complete bell end and I am pleased he will be off the road for a while.

Some of the blame lies with the pedestrian who crossed the road looking at her phone.
