Quite happy to, its just all the unnecessary nonsense that he insists goes along with it.
Assigning number of characters to Varchars indeed, I mean its not as though disk space costs a fortune these days.
Such over engineering is just absolute time wasting IMO.
I had a similar 'conversation' with another database developer about the fact I was using nvarchar - he threw up the space argument and I reminded him it all goes through .net via SSIS and the time saved farting about with code pages is worth it.
For your original problem I'd tell him to get orff maaa laaaaand !
