That could be the straw the breaks the camel's back. You might have hit on to something here...

Until the bitcoin network is upgraded with lightening whatever transaction thingy then trading with market futures will be difficult as it'll require faster transactions.

this is truly an incredible run.......

but I am still convinced that bitcoin will have one more crash and burn moment before hitting new highs of £50,000 plus......

A little late to the party or rollercoaster. But if you wanted to "dabble" - can you just open a wallet with blockchain.info - deposit sterling and buy btc?
        Is it that simple ?

You have to use one of the exchanges to buy, like coinbase/gdax or kraken. I think coinbase is the easiest

good idea to put FIAT on one of the exchanges, but wait until after the correction or you'll be roasted

It will be very interesting to see if the unconfirmed transactions are Buys or Sells.

Logically this could lead to a big swing in price either way.

Indeed, imagine if you were frantically trying to sell now? You'd be doing your nut if you started to see the price drop and couldn't cash out. Cashing out at the peak is not easy.
