If so:
Fill 5l
Pour into 3l
Remainder in 5l = 2l
Pour that into your final container
Repeat.

Fill 3 litre bottle to full - pour until 5 litre bottle is full.
Empty the 5 litre bottle
Pour the remaining litre from the 3 litre bottle to the 5 litre bottle. (1 litre in 5 litre bottle)
Fill the 3 litre bottle again - pour all into the 5 litre bottle.

The 5 litre bottle now contains 4 litres.

Use the 4 litre mark on the 5 litre bottle.

I'd use the substitution clause in my contract and replace the 3l with a 4l, then bill the client for 2 x 5l.
