I think I read on immigration boards that language lessons aren't free (anymore) to immigrants in UK, seems there's profit to be made assimilating people....

I'm not really getting the swearing an Oath bit. Being able to integrate requires a change to or at least an appreciation of our culture. I'm pretty sure swearing oaths and it's importance (arguable) are well down the list of understanding or caring.
Totally agree with LondonMac though, integration is a difficult and emotive subject so why not look at 'ability to work' which is quite a bit more tangible. If you are unable to communicate to a point you can either work or learn to work you're gone. Difficult to argue you are coming to better your life when you don't have or want the tools to make that happen.'CUK forum personality of 2011 - Winner - Yes really!!!!Comment

How many immigrants don't speak any English, or rather don't end up learning English after a few years? Are there any reliable facts on this?
I don't think the problem is immigrants not integrating, it's simply the sheer numbers involved.
(also it's certainly not racist)
If it becomes an issue I'm sure they will change.Comment

It's a bad sign assuming that the immigrants doesn't want to integrate in the society or learn English, and cases were after trying to integreate they are pushed back for whatever reason.Comment

that should do!
The introduction of English language tests for skilled migrants from outside Europe next year was last night branded "lace curtain racism" by community leaders.
The tests are to be introduced alongside a new draft immigration bill to be unveiled in today's Queen's speech that is designed to simplify the confusing jigsaw of rules and regulations that have been introduced over the past decade.
The language tests will be phased in from next spring as part of the introduction of an Australian-style immigration points system. It will mean that most migrants coming to Britain to do skilled or highly skilled jobs will have to demonstrate that they have an acceptable level of English before they come. Home Office ministers are also considering whether similar language tests should be applied in family reunion cases.Comment
