26 Amazing Facts About Finland's Unorthodox Education System
Worth a read - there's a school just outside Munich our smalls are attending that follows the same principle no home work etc 10am starts, it's awesome. Much worldly wisdom not to mention the bilingualism. I know some London folks paying £10k a year just for 2nd language lessons outside school..

Living on the mainland in a country with the wonderful grammar school system, eldest daughter, age 11, has just started at our preferred (state) grammar school. She now has 8 years of the best education and without us having to fork out for private school fees, how cool is that ?
The school she is at has 250 children, 1 class of 30 for each academic year, 150 children sat the exam and she came 14th.
From September last year she went every Saturday to training/preparation for the grammer school exams, at the place that ran the training there were 500 children every saturday, car parking was a mess. So it was a lot of work on our part and her part but for sure doing the preparation training paid off, without it she wouldn't have had a chance at the exam.
Now we have to get the second one in in two years time.
It is such a relief knowing she has 8 years of the best education and in a class of children who all fought for their place there.
Milan in pleased as punch mode.
Regarding the trades, the education system here is excellent, her friends who remain at the school, at 16 they have the chance to go onto higher schools where they can specialise in any trades they want, from electrician to restaurant manager and everything in between, and the system works so well that if they excel at the trade school they then have the option at 18 to apply to University for regular courses. I have a friend who studied to be an electrician from 16 to 18 and his grades were so high, he qualified to apply to university and applied and got a place on a law course, and became a lawyer.
What an education system.

The problem with a lot of private schools - in particular non-selective ones - is that you will get lazy rich kids who will bring down the standard of education. You won't have the same problem in good grammar schools.Comment
