I did the course last year. It was about 3 1/2 hours on a weekday in the end. Some of it was quite good; some of it was some old duffer waffling on. They warned us at the start not to take photos or film anything in case there were any celebs there, which there was:

I was invited to attend a 'Speed Awareness Course' - and here's what I learned

I did one of these "toad courses" in Sadly Broke about 10 years ago.

Mine was 2 days for driving without due care and attention after knocking a social worker off her bike.

I have nine points, so when I had another speeding fine I had no choice but to take the course.

But I've found that if you shout down the phone at them when renewing, and threaten to change insurers, the insurance stays the same.

P.S. If you take the course, don't forget photo ID or they'll ask you to leave and you'll have to book another one with no refund!

(Luckily I had my passport in my coat, or I'd have been kicked out.)

                I took the points.

I've heard about some price comparison sites asking whether you've been on a speed awareness course, so thought what's the difference?

Take the course. Then laugh at the gory photos. Argue continually that it will make no difference. You can only concentrate when going fast - too slow and you fall asleep.

The camera's are no longer the revenue generators, points + fines are centrally administered (i.e. No funds for the Xmas party).

SAC's are the revenue Generators now.

Out of curiosity what was the speed declared on the NIP?

There are no gory photos, but you get to test your Holmes-like deductive powers studying innocuous looking street scenes and struggling to think of anything that might be dangerous, such as kids running out of a park or cyclists suddenly appearing from a cycle lane, or slippery leaves, etc etc.
