c) Or take 2-3 months break. This suits some travel arrangements I have pre-booked and I could even try out an idea or two of my own I've had for a while- but I'm also concerned here that it might look bad being "out of work" for a while and having to explain my situation.
I took 4 months off during the summer to fly around the country. Didn't affect me at all - I just said I took the time off.

I might just stick with (a) as it makes the CV look good, and yeah I agree it's none of anyone's business.
take option a if there is nothing out there its only 3 months but you know what they are like, plan your exit to suit you, don't do free overtime.
Go for a few interviews and see if there is a better deal on offer out there.
As its a multi year contract ask the agency what they are going to do to keep their revenue stream going maybe you can go halves on the cut?
