Religion is the oldest control mechanism known to man. Control by fear. Instil the belief early on that they'll burn in hell for all eternity if they don't believe everything you tell them. Silence critics either by derision, excommunication or violence. Scrap religion and you'd have to find some other way of controlling people or inspiring them. Imagine having people pulling together for the common good rather than serving to divide and conquer.
