Going to be a fat lot of good for financial services / security cleared roles.
It take 5 weeks, on average, to get the background checks, completed, in finance, for example.

Not read the entire thread but if this goes through it will kill contracting stone dead. BUT one way to think about it...

Clients obviously still want contractors otherwise there'd be no market out there. Its obviously cost effective and convenient otherwise clients would just get permies in but they don't. This is an important point.

I don't think it will kill it dead. Contractors will either have suck it up, go permie, retire, run their plan B full-time, or emigrate. Most can't retire and the last two options are too scary for more than a minority. If there aren't enough jobs for everyone to go permie, there is no choice but to contract for what you can get.

But this isn't going to happen, is it. You won't end up on Client Co's payroll. You'll end up on the payroll of either the agency if not direct or whatever Payroll Agency client co will use if this kicks off. Your day rate will be treated the same way as brollies do which factors in your paid holiday allowance.

No one actually thinks that they are going to end up on client co's headcount or actually get any benefits on top of their current rates, do they?

We don't know anything for certain. But think of this: if an agency suddenly has more contractors on payroll, it will shoot up their employee headcount and also turnover and costs. Takes them over a SME entity limit and entertains all sorts of other issues (vat, bonuses, equality, hr issues, Corp tax elements). Could potentially open a massive Pandora's box.

No one knows what is going to happen. There is what HMG want and the end result of what HMG implements and the workarounds companies then invent... Personally I'm moving up the food chain (plan a) and out of the industry entirely plan b...

I hadn't heard from mine - I nudged him on Monday, he apologised that my email had got missed in the summer recess, and I had a full response (including the rumour) yesterday. I'm going to push him further for his personal opinion.

Whatever the personal opinion, a Tory MP HAS to vote with the government on finance matters. A vote against is in effect a motion of no confidence.

Went though all this with NTRT. F4J was very similar - government put a three line whip on child matters.
