No idea, probably the same reason you maintain something by doing manitenance.Originally posted by SimonMac View PostWhy is there a D in Fridge, but not in Refrigerator?I'm not even an atheist so much as I am an antitheist; I not only maintain that all religions are versions of the same untruth, but I hold that the influence of churches, and the effect of religious belief, is positively harmful. Isn't Fridge a bit like Hoover - a brand name that has become synonymous with the product?…Maybe we ain’t that young anymoreComment

How would you pronounce "Frige"? You'd probably try to say it like "Freeg".
It's probably a case of people writing it down based on how it sounds and that spelling becoming the norm. Will work inside IR35. Or for food.Comment

Nope, "fridge" was never a brand name. There was a brand called "Frigidaire", and "fridge" is believed to be an abbreviation thereof, but it's no more a brand name than "hoo" would be.Originally posted by WTFH View PostIsn't Fridge a bit like Hoover - a brand name that has become synonymous with the product?
An alternative spelling I've seen in books published around the 1920s and 1930s is "frig", but that seems to have been quite short-lived, for obvious reasons
