    Simples.
You may jest. But back in 2008 if the solution to the crisis was to put more money into the real economy(such as construction projects or reduced taxes) instead of QE that only benefits the elite, then things might not be as bad now.

Some conspiracy theorists believe the whole "crisis" was manufactured to put the wealth firmly into the hands of the global elite, with a few generations of debt serfs to pay for it.

I don't go that far. But the happiest societies are where there is equality of wealth. And the inequality gap is widening.

              Royalty reguarly does.

As for the Govt. as nice an idea that would be (and actually a very good one considering Houses of Parliment needs £3bn of renovation) I don't see it ever happening

Instead of having ICTs and shipping in foreign workers to occupy bedsits on mass to provide workers on the cheap, why not ship them in from deprived areas like Cornwall, Wales, and Scotland.
Then have state poor houses, to house the workers

                Problem solved
Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.

No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.

It'll be worth so much more than that once it's divvied up into flats and flogged off to the chinese and russians though

That sounds entirely the opposite of 'equally'.
