Christianity is based on the New Testament, not the Old. Hence the name: "Christianity".

And dismissing millions of people you never met as "bigots" is a prejudice much bigger than anything in this story.

That's not actually true, however Jesus is the example Christians are to follow and he didn't stone people, hate them, or judge them. He also didn't tell people their sins weren't sins.
