Of course rights are negotiable, it happens all the time. The 'right' to self-determination was formalised in the Atlantic Charter of 1941, before that it only existed as a principle, with no standing in law.

I think you'll find that rights can be equated to principles, formalising them is only the process of writing them down and everyone agreeing the finer points.

Britain violated the rights of the Argentinian settlers when she kicked them off by force just six generations ago. Our 'rights' to the rock date back to that act of aggression.

That is a rather narrow view though. You have left out the very real possibility of sizeable quantitites of Oil/Gas being located in the surrounding waters and all the associated revenue that might generate for the Treasury. On top of that you could have endless wind turbines strewn across the place. That ought to give you a stiffy if nothing else.

Besides, now that we have decent defensive capabilities on the islands, most of the outlay has already been spent. It would be an entirely different proposition for the Argies to capture the islands now than it was back in the early eighties when the defensive capabilities amounted to little more than a chapter of the Peggy Spencer formation Dance Team.
