Not exactly. In that case they would have you detained under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act with the cooperation of an Approved Mental Health Professional or another Doctor if they are an AMHP themselves.

The entire discussion would still be covered by Medical Confidentiality as no non-medical person would be involved.

The police would only have to be involved if you became violent or resisted in the course of that, and even then they would not be told the details of why you were being detained, only that you were a threat to yourself or others and required sectioning. Belive me, the Police really dont want to know the details of your mental state, they just want to know you have been properly locked up so they dont have to deal with you themselves.

Depression is not insanity. Nor does being depressed mean you are suicidal.

Being suicidal is not insanity. Nor does it mean you want to kill others.

Neither of these lead to wanting to kill a plane full of people.

If the guy turns out to have been pyschotic (which sounds more and more likely) thats something else entirely.

Demonsing people who are depressed and / or suicidal because of this is just ignorant knee-jerking.

Quite probably, but that does not mean that depressed/suicidal people are insane. Making a link between this event and 100's of millions of people around the world who suffer from depression is just ignorant.

No one said it was ok.

What we are saying is you can't label everyone who has been diagnosed with depression or has had suicidal tendencies as a potential murderer.
